I don’t know how many times I’ve listen to this tune now, but it’s still fun. On this journey collecting all the songs I’ve found a lot interesting side tracks, but also boring mediocre renditions.
So this song was covered from the very beginning in 1966 and I guess this was pretty common for singers, to interpret a hit single. Similar to what happens today when some producers take a well known hit and mix a beat and an annoying singer on top of it (sorry J. Simpson).
Another interesting thing is, that this is interpreted by so many genres and cultures.
Punks, Skins, Goths, Rockabillies and Metalheads like to dance and raise their fists to it as well as country singers and local rock bands enjoy performing it. Not to mention the weirdos, outsider musicians and avantgarde faction or even Mozart could have played that tune.
Enjoyable are also all those sixties big band versions, usually lead by a master of trumpet, saxophone, percussion, sitar, accordeon or violin or all the jazz and soul versions.
And last but not least all the translated lyrics into French, Spanish, Italian, German, Dutch, Czech and Finnish are pretty enjoyable too.
There are floating much more versions around and I am happy to add more if I am able to or if you send me something. Look at this list and see what’s there, then shoot me a message here or in the comments.
